Multicultural Carers' Consultation Event

On Monday 13th March, HTT facilitated the hosting of a multilingual consultation and research event for carers by Social Security Experience Panels, in Glasgow. HTT brought together over 65 seldom heard members of the local ethnic minority communities who, through interpreters, learned about the benefit entitlements and support available to them as carers.

Many of the attendees had not previously viewed themselves in the role of 'Carer', as to care for a spouse, disabled child or family member is embedded in their culture and they had been unaware of the support, financial or otherwise, available to them.

There was constructive dialogue between participants, researchers and Social Security Experience Panels staff, with learning from the experience for all the parties involved. The event was evidence of the ongoing need to identify and reach out to those who usually go unheard.

Removing communication barriers and providing a platform based on mutual respect, an open mind and a willingness to develop an understanding of the complex needs of service users (current and potential), are essential in delivering inclusive information, advice and services.
